Old Business
- Removal of the Dam on Moore’s Creek
The City is considering a stream improvement project that would remove the breached dam on Moore’s Creek (near the end of McElroy Ave). At the last meeting there was a request to consider repairing the dam, rather than replacing it. The City inquired with the Army Corps of Engineers and received the following response:
“We typically are not looking to create dams on small streams. However, should someone propose such a project at this location, it would likely be in individual permit minimum of 120 days to process once a complete application is received. If the project were to back up water, the applicant may be responsible for stream mitigation (typically $300-$500 per foot). Also, there would have to be a purpose and need for the dam to be repaired. If the dam were repaired it would have to be done according to historic architecture and coordinated with DHR.”

- Azalea Park
- Garden Shed – The garden shed and its contents were purchased back in 2011 with a Neighborhood Development Grant to the FSNA. An MOU written at the time said that the “FSNA will provide maintenance to the garden shed, greenhouse and tiller … as long as each item continues in functional condition.” The FSNA will need to identify a new point person for the garden shed and equipment, otherwise Parks and Rec has stated they intend to remove the shed and dispose of the contents.
- Azalea Park Invasive Species Clean-Up – Autumn Olive has begun to leaf out with the recent warm weather. Control of this invasive species requires applying herbicide directly to the stumps immediately after cutting. If you are interested in assisting in a clean-up day in coordination with Park staff, please email me at: fsna.president@gmail.com. Date to be determined based on volunteer availability.
Announcements
- Fry’s Spring Station Social – The next social will be at Fry’s Spring Station on Thursday, March 23rd. There will be food and drink specials and live music beginning at 8 pm. We hope to see you there!
- Cville Village Community Event – The simulcast on February 13th was unfortunately canceled due to a snowstorm in the host city of Boston. A new date has not yet been announced.
- Mobility Summit for Belmont Bridge Replacement – The City of Charlottesville invites you to attend the first community event for the Belmont Bridge Replacement Project. The drop-in style, highly interactive workshop will be organized around a variety of stations to 1) identify community values, 2) learn about challenges and constraints and 3) gather feedback on design elements. Saturday, March 11th, 9 am to 1 pm at the Sprint Pavilion. Inclement Weather Location – Water Street Center.
